Same-Day

Voter Registration in New Mexico

New Mexico offers Same-Day Voter Registration (SDR), which allows eligible residents to register and vote on the same day during early voting and on Election Day.

How It Works:
  • Visit Your Polling Location: During early voting or on Election Day, head to any polling place in your county.
  • Bring one of the following: (1) a New Mexico driver’s license or New Mexico identification card issued through the motor vehicle division of the taxation and Revenue Department; (2) any document that contains an address in the county together with a photo identification card; or (3) a current valid student photo identification card from a post-secondary educational institution in New Mexico accompanied by a current student fee statement that contains the student’s address in the county.”
  • Register and Vote: A poll worker will help you complete your voter registration. Once you’re registered, you can immediately cast your ballot.

Automatic Voter Registration

Automatic Voter Registration (AVR), automatically registers eligible citizens to vote through state agencies, like the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD).

When you apply for or renew your driver's license, state ID, or conduct other business with the MVD, you'll be automatically registered to vote. Automatic Voter Registration increases voter participation by removing barriers to registration.
