Legislative Wins

In 2026, immigrant workers, families, community leaders, and allies across New Mexico helped secure major legislative victories for safety, dignity, and shared prosperity.

What did we win this session?

HB 9+ — Immigrant Safety Act Bans future 287(g) agreements with ICE and prevents state and local entities from acting as extensions of federal immigration enforcement. This victory protects families from detention and separation, strengthens community trust, and affirms that immigrant safety is public safety.

HB 124 — Office of New Americans
Act Permanently establishes the Office of New Americans at the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, creating long-term infrastructure to support immigrant workforce integration, adult education, credentialing, and professional licensing.

SB 40 — Driver Privacy and Safety Act
Restricts the use of automatic license plate readers for immigration enforcement purposes and protects families from harmful data misuse, tracking, and targeting through state and local systems.

Expanded Workforce Development Funding
The Legislature included $3.25 million in additional investments for NM Ascend and free high school equivalency exams, helping low-wage and immigrant workers access training, credentials, and better-paying jobs.

Together, these wins reflect years of organizing by immigrant workers, community leaders, coalition partners, and advocates across New Mexico. They show what is possible when our communities stand together for dignity, inclusion, and a stronger future for all.
